Huskies end the year with a 1-1 tie with the Lightning

SAN RAMON -- In the final game of the year, the Huskies took on the Lightning. On paper, this looked to be an easy win for the Huskies as the Lightning only had won two games all season. But, as they say, that is why they play the games. The Huskies came out and quickly put pressure on the Lightning goalie, who made a really great stop on a nice outside shot from Emily Glaser. Unfortunately, the Huskies couldn’t keep applying the pressure and played rather sloppily for the rest of the first half. The defense of the Huskies was a little out of sorts due to Natali Feyzbakhsh, the Huskies most valuable defender, out of the game. The Lightning were able to make a number of passes in front of the Huskies goal and finally found an opening and scored on the first half goalie, Elizabeth Castaneda.

Drew Dudley stepped up and volunteered to be the second half goalie and did keep the Lightning from scoring again. Emily Glaser got the lone score of the game for the Huskies, off a nice pass from Gabby Silva. Emily Glaser had another scoring opportunity, but shot the ball just wide right. Korah Rose had a nice breakaway chance in the last 10 minutes of the game, but wasn’t able to capitalize. Colleen Tolan, getting a rare chance at playing forward also had a nice shot on goal late in the game, but the shot went wide right. The Huskies did wake up and applied a lot of pressure on the Lightning, but the girls just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. The second half was completely controlled by the Huskies and the Lightning looked like they were exhausted, but the game still ended in a 1-1 tie.

As it turned out, this was a very costly tie. The game immediately following this one was the Tremors vs the Pride. The Pride was the lone San Ramon team to beat the Huskies, and if the Huskies would have won and the Pride lost, then the Huskies would have earned the right to play in the Crossroads Tournament at the end of the year. As it turned out, the Pride did in fact lose and if just one of our many shots had gone in, the Huskies would have been playing next week in Dublin representing San Ramon. But, because of the tie, the Pride ended with one more point than the Huskies in the season standings, so the Pride got the nod.

It was a very good year for the Huskies and I really wish we could have gone into the post season. This was a great group of girls and I think we all enjoyed ourselves this year. Thank you very much to all the Huskies and their families.
