Huskies end the year with a 1-1 tie with the Lightning

SAN RAMON -- In the final game of the year, the Huskies took on the Lightning. On paper, this looked to be an easy win for the Huskies as the Lightning only had won two games all season. But, as they say, that is why they play the games. The Huskies came out and quickly put pressure on the Lightning goalie, who made a really great stop on a nice outside shot from Emily Glaser. Unfortunately, the Huskies couldn’t keep applying the pressure and played rather sloppily for the rest of the first half. The defense of the Huskies was a little out of sorts due to Natali Feyzbakhsh, the Huskies most valuable defender, out of the game. The Lightning were able to make a number of passes in front of the Huskies goal and finally found an opening and scored on the first half goalie, Elizabeth Castaneda.

Drew Dudley stepped up and volunteered to be the second half goalie and did keep the Lightning from scoring again. Emily Glaser got the lone score of the game for the Huskies, off a nice pass from Gabby Silva. Emily Glaser had another scoring opportunity, but shot the ball just wide right. Korah Rose had a nice breakaway chance in the last 10 minutes of the game, but wasn’t able to capitalize. Colleen Tolan, getting a rare chance at playing forward also had a nice shot on goal late in the game, but the shot went wide right. The Huskies did wake up and applied a lot of pressure on the Lightning, but the girls just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. The second half was completely controlled by the Huskies and the Lightning looked like they were exhausted, but the game still ended in a 1-1 tie.

As it turned out, this was a very costly tie. The game immediately following this one was the Tremors vs the Pride. The Pride was the lone San Ramon team to beat the Huskies, and if the Huskies would have won and the Pride lost, then the Huskies would have earned the right to play in the Crossroads Tournament at the end of the year. As it turned out, the Pride did in fact lose and if just one of our many shots had gone in, the Huskies would have been playing next week in Dublin representing San Ramon. But, because of the tie, the Pride ended with one more point than the Huskies in the season standings, so the Pride got the nod.

It was a very good year for the Huskies and I really wish we could have gone into the post season. This was a great group of girls and I think we all enjoyed ourselves this year. Thank you very much to all the Huskies and their families.

Huskies Mow Over the Verdes 4-0

DUBLIN -- The Huskies went up against a second Dublin team on a wet field for the second time in less than a week. This game against the Dublin Verde was a little sloppy that saw the Huskies dominate most all parts of the game, even though the final score of 4-0 was closer than the gameplay would have suggested.

Erin Cantoni started the scoring from a nice pass from Emily Glaser, who picked up her 10th assist for the season. Kristen Glavee brought the ball near the Verde goal and passed it back into the middle where Amanda Fornataro finished it off with a nice shot that found the back of the net. In the second half, Erin Cantoni returned the favor to Emily, who made her shot, which gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead. After one of the Verde players took a goal kick and then was the first person to touch the ball after it left the goal box, the Huskies got to take an indirect kick just outside of the goal box. The obvious choice to take the shot was Amanda Fornataro as she has probably the best penalty kick. Because it was an indirect kick, Korah Rose tapped the ball and Amanda launched the ball up and it landed in the right corner of the goal, finishing off the scoring for the game.

The Huskies have one more regular season game left in two weeks against the San Ramon Lightning. Nice job girls. It’s been a lot of fun coaching you all this year.

Huskies Blow Up The Dynamites 5-0

SAN RAMON -- This Monday evening at 7:00pm, the San Ramon Huskies took on the Dublin Dynamite under the lights of Central Park. This was the first game back for the Huskies after there devastating loss to the Pride a little over a week ago. This game started similarly, in that the Huskies came out very active and scored early and often. The first goal of the game came from a nice cross by right forward Jeanette Sarkany and a nice left footed finish by right midfield Gabby Silva. This was Gabby’s first goal of the season and one she wanted badly as she’s been close a number of times before.

The second goal was an easy one for Amanda Fornataro, who was in perfect position for a center midfielder after right forward Drew Dudley took a shot on goal that was blocked, but not controlled by, the Dublin goalie. Amanda was right there in front of the goal when the goalie knocked it down and easily knocked it in to make the score 2-0.

The third goal was probably the biggest one, simply because it was scored by Erin Glaser, who has not scored a goal since she was 9 years old. Erin’s twin sister Emily brought the ball down and centered it beautifully. Amanda was not able to get it in, but she managed to get the ball back and made a great leading pass to Erin Glaser who shot it past the goalie.

The fourth and final goal of the first half was a pretty one. It all started with a nice strong throw in from Gabby Silva to Jeanette Sarkany, who brought the ball up the right wing. Jeanette saw an open Drew Dudley, who made a nice trap and quickly passed it over to an open Korah Rose, who made a nice trap and quickly passed it on to Emily Glaser, who finished with a quick one touch scoring shot past the goalie. That was definitely one of my favorite goals of the year because of the nice passes and traps. The Huskies looked like a real team right there and it made me proud to be their coach.

The second was rather slow as players got a chance to try out new positions. One of those new positions was Madeleine Clements playing her first game as goalie. Madeleine did have to make a good stop, but for the most part it was a rather stress free half for her and the defense. The lone goal of the second half came from a nice feed from Caitlin Weber up to Drew Dudley who finished it off with a tough shot from the side of the goal over the goalie’s head. Drew had a very tough angle to deal with and from where I was, I didn’t think she could have scored from where she was.

This was yet another dominating performance by the Huskies. Let’s see if we can keep it going again against the second Dublin team in our league this Saturday.

OUCH!!!! 3-4

SAN RAMON -- Even five days afterwards, it’s hard to write about this game. The first half saw the Huskies jump out to a 3-0 lead and totally dominate the game and outshot the Pride probably 8-1, and that was despite one of the Pride’s parents calling offside on the Huskies at least 5 times. Two of the best goals of the season came in that first half, first Amanda had a nifty left footed shot that she placed right over the head of the Pride goalie and then a beautiful give and go between Erin Cantoni and Emily Glaser resulted in a great one-touch goal by Erin.

That was pretty much the end of the highlights. For some reason, the second half was a complete opposite of the first half. The Pride came out and out hustled, out shot, out everything the Huskies. With only 30 seconds left in the game, the Pride got a breakaway (see The Final Straw in the videos section) and made the winning goal to beat the Huskies 3-4. If the Huskies could have held on for the tie then they would almost be guaranteed a spot in post season play. As it stands now, the Huskies are going to need some help from one of the other San Ramon teams to knock off the Pride in the last two weeks of the season.

Considering the way the Huskies laid down and almost gave up at the end of this game, there’s no guarantee that we’ll be able to win all three of the last games anyway to give us the chance to still be in contention. Hopefully this game has left our system and we can get back to our winning Huskies ways.

Huskies Beat Up On The Velocity 4-1

SAN RAMON -- In a match up of two ailing teams, the undefeated in regular season Velocity met the undefeated in regular season Huskies. Within the first minute, the Huskies brought the ball into scoring position and Colleen Tolan’s shot was stopped by the Velocity goalie. The Huskies kept the pressure on and Jeanette Sarkany started the scoring for the Huskies after stealing a goal kick and weaving through some Velocity defenders before nailing a shot in the left hand side of the net.

According to the Velocity head coach, Emily Glaser took seven shots on goal in the first half. The sixth shot was the only one that found the back of the net, though, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead. The Huskies outshot the Velocity by at least 10 shots in the first half. One of the more memorable ones was a nice left-footed one by Korah Rose (after a nice pass from Jeanette) which was stopped by a nice effort by the Velocity goalie.

The second half started a little sloppy and the Huskies defense had a total breakdown which allowed the Velocity to take an uncontested shot which made the score 2-1 even though the Huskies had been dominating the entire game. In order to shore up the defense, Erin Cantoni was called on to become the center fullback and she definitely did her job. From that point on the Velocity got no more clear looks at the goal.

The second half was definitely dominated by the Huskies and the most dominating Husky was absolutely Amanda Fornataro. Amanda played center midfielder most of the second half and she seemingly was everywhere on the field. In an impressive display of stamina, Amanda time and time again was the first on the ball when there was a loose ball up for grabs. Even if she hadn’t scored, Amanda was going to be the star of the game. But Amanda did end up scoring twice, both fantastic shots from outside the 18, which helped provide the much needed insurance goals. With Amanda’s two goals, the Huskies finished off the Velocity by a score of 4-1.

Yet another dominating performance over a San Ramon team, Huskies. Good job. Next week’s game against the Pride will be the big one. If the Huskies can win that one, they are almost guaranteed a post season spot.

Huskies Shake Up The Earthquakes 2-1

DANVILLE -- The third and final game of the Saddleback Tournament for the Huskies pitted the Huskies against the Mustang Earthquakes. The Huskies was the 4th ranked team in their pool and the Earthquakes was the 2nd ranked team in their pool. After only one minute in the game, it was obvious that these rankings weren’t going to mean anything. Emily continued where she left off against the Butterfly Kisses and outran the Earthquakes overmatched right fullback and blasted in a beautiful shot. Unfortunately, it happened so early in the game, the videographer hadn’t set up the camera yet, so Emily had yet another of her goals go unrecorded.

To the Earthquakes’ credit, they moved the slow right fullback out of that position because it was quickly obvious that Emily would have her way with that side of the defense if they didn’t make an adjustment. The Huskies kept up the pressure and played a nice half with only one substitute. Jeanette Sarkany added to the lead when she took the ball up the right sideline and fought through three defenders and passed over to the left side of the field, but then she went and hung out in front of the goal. The ball made it back to the front of the goal and Jeanette did a fantastic job of trapping the ball with her right leg and while the ball was up in the air, she used her left foot to knock it past the goalie. It was a pretty shot that you need to see on our website.

Unfortunately, in the last few seconds, the Earthquakes took advantage of Emily Glaser being thrown into left fullback, where she obviously is not very comfortable playing, and managed to get a shot past the first half goalie, Caitlin Weber, to make the game closer at 2-1.

Elizabeth Castaneda came in to play goalie for the second half and she made a few good stops to help the Huskies hold on for the win. With Caitlin Weber out due to a right quadriceps injury, the 11 girls on the Huskies had to play the entire second half without any rest. It was a hard fought game and it was very impressive that the Huskies were able to last through the half without allowing the Earthquakes to score.

Natali Feyzbakhsh had an outstanding game as the sweeper and played a huge role in keeping the Earthquakes from scoring, especially in the second half when everyone was starting to get fatigued.

Nice job girls, way to play hard all the way to the end. We’re all proud of you!

Huskies Hold On Against the Butterfly Kisses

DANVILLE -- The Huskies came out and dominated the first part of this game against the Butterfly Kisses, but the Kisses got a single breakaway and got behind the defense and was able to start the scoring of this game to take the lead 1-0. The Huskies managed to tie up the game when Amanda Fornataro got her second goal of the season. The Huskies took the tie into halftime, feeling like they should be leading by more than a few goals.

The Huskies came out in the second half and it turned into the Emily Glaser show. I’m not sure how many times her teammates got her the ball, but Emily sprinted up that left sideline many many times this half and crossed the ball in front of the goal giving her teammates a bunch of chances to score. Both Colleen Tolan and Erin Cantoni did a nice job of finishing two of Emily’s crosses, giving the Huskies a 3-1 lead. The Butterfly Kisses did manage another goal and challenged in the final seconds, but Elizabeth Castaneda made the final save to help the Huskies hold on for the win.

One of the exciting parts of this game was that Colleen scored her first goal in about three years, so she was very excited, except her dad was not at the game to see it. We do have Colleen’s goal on the website, so make sure to check that out.

Huskies Stumble Against Mustang United 0-4

DANVILLE -- The Huskies showed up for the first game of the 2009 Saddleback Tournament against the Mustang United, the champions of the Rec+ Kick-off tournament, and they were looking good for the first 10 minutes or so. After that, there were not a lot of highlights for the Huskies. The United got three goals in the first half and added one more in the second half for a 4-0 win. The United didn’t exactly dominate the game, but this was definitely not one of the Huskies better games. Since there was no scoring in this game, I’m going to spend more time talking about the two wins.

Huskies Dominate the Spirits 4-0

SAN RAMON -- The Huskies, coming off a 4-0 win a week ago, met up with the Spirit, who opened their season last week with a 3-0 win. The game started at 8:30am at Coyote Crossing, ensuring the expected 100 degree weather would not be an issue. The first fifteen minutes of the game started a little slow with the ball mostly on the Spirit side of the field, but with nothing for the Huskies to show for it. Once Emily Glaser entered the game as the left forward, the Huskies offense started clicking, though. Gabby Silva, the left midfielder, and Amanda Fornataro, the center mid, both did a nice job of getting the ball to Emily, who fired the ball many times either to the goal or in front of the goal. The first goal was actually scored off of a free kick by Emily, who centered the ball and Jeanette Sarkany, the right forward, put the ball in the back of the net. The Spirit goalie made many nice saves, so the Huskies went into halftime up only 1-0.

Similar to last week, though, the Huskies came out and absolutely dominated the second half. Due to Erin Cantoni’s wrist injury and Drew Dudley’s ankle injury, Natali Feyzbakhsh took her turn in as the second half goalie. Just to put the dominance into perspective, Natali touched the ball once and took one goal kick for the entire second half.

Only a couple of minutes into the second half, Navi Bal made a nice pass at midfield to Elizabeth Castaneda who sliced through the Spirit defense and brought the ball all the way down to and past the goalie, while Erin Cantoni, playing the right forward position, ran down hard and finished off the ball for her first score of the game. Elizabeth had to leave the game soon after this play due to her ongoing knee injury, but it was definitely a highlight of the game, especially considering this is Elizabeth’s first season of organized soccer.

Only a couple of minutes later, Navi Bal, playing center mid, made a beautiful pass in front of the goal where Erin Cantoni knocked in her second goal of the game. Erin wasn’t done yet, though. Emily got the ball out wide left and centered it and Erin was there again to score her third and final goal of the game. The video of the play only caught the pass, but did not catch the actual scoring shot. The bright side of that was the camera did catch the Spirit defender throwing grass on Emily after she picked herself up off the ground. Make sure to check out that video on the website, because that is some funny stuff.

Another quick random video you should check out is Colleen’s New Toy. This last week Coach Mike Lego went over drive kicks with the girls and most of them really caught on and some were able to use their laces for the first time. One of those that really impressed with her improvement was Colleen Tolan and she got a chance to show off her newfound power kick in the game and luckily it was caught on video. Nice job Colleen!

The rest of the game was spent on the Spirit side of the field while the Spirit goalie managed to keep any of the half dozen shots that were taken on her out of the goal.

This was a very strong game for the Huskies and I can’t tell you how impressed I am with how much these girls have improved in such a short time. Let’s keep it up Huskies!

Huskies Open it Up Against the Tremors, 4-0

SAN RAMON - The San Ramon Huskies faced off against the San Ramon Tremors this morning at 10:00am at Quail Run Park. Although half the team was up late the night before with Coach Jim and Coach Scott watching the San Jose Earthquakes down in Santa Clara, the Huskies came out and dominated the first half. Although the Huskies controlled the ball most of the half, they weren’t able to get any good shots off. Going into halftime, the score was 0-0, but the Huskies definitely looked like the better team.

Emily Glaser got an unusual 15 minute break in the first half, so when the second half started, she was well rested and ready to go back in at her favorite position, left forward. Emily wasted no time in breaking the tie score by taking a nice pass from the defensive side of the field from Natali Feyzbakhsh and taking it down to the corner of the 18 and made a beautiful shot that went over the goalie’s head. Unfortunately, the videographer missed the shot, so it is not included in the video highlights.

Drew Dudley was a surprise starter in this game. She hurt her ankle at a practice a little over a week ago and she was not supposed to play in this game. Midway through the San Jose Earthquakes game, Drew looks over at me and says “Coach, I’m playing in tomorrow’s game.” I didn’t really believe it, but come Saturday morning, Drew said she was ready to go, so I started her in at goalie. She did a fantastic job back there, but she said she was ready to go in as right forward, so that’s where she started in the second half. After Emily scored her goal, Emily brought the ball deep into the left corner again and then crossed the ball right in front of the goal and Drew was in perfect position and got credit for scoring the second goal of the game, although Drew did admit at the end of the game that she didn’t actually touch the ball and that it was one of the Tremors players that kicked it in the goal. Regardless, Emily got the assist and Drew was given credit for the goal.

The third goal of the game came after Kristen Glavee brought the ball deep into the Tremors side of the field and after the Tremors kicked the ball off the sideline, Colleen Tolan made a nice throw-in to Drew, who made a nice pass to the center of the goal. Both Gabby Silva and Korah Rose were in good position in front of the goal and it paid off because Gabby kicked the ball up to Korah who finished it off with her first goal of the season.

With less than 10 minutes to go in the game, Amanda Fornataro, who had been out for awhile in the second half after running hard as the center fullback for most of the game, was put back in as center mid. Amanda wasn’t sure she wanted to go back in as a midfielder because it requires so much running, but she didn’t take long to find the back of the net for her first goal of the year as well. Amanda was in the proper position and she finished the shot, but it all happened because of the hard work by Erin Cantoni. She brought the ball deep, near the Tremors goal, but when surrounded by the defenders, instead of just kicking the ball towards the goal, Erin had the presence of mind to relax and passed the ball back to the middle of the goal where Amanda was waiting. Unfortunately, the video camera ran out of tape and was in the process of being changed when Erin passed it to Amanda for the final score of the game.

When watching the videos, make sure to watch the Tremor’s throw-in specialist. The one thing I will always tell the girls is to “not get thrown over”. Well, Natali Feyzbakhsh was the left defender and that is where the throw-in specialist was doing most of her throw-ins, right over Natali. It happened at least a half-dozen times, but the last segment of the video shows Natali finally getting the better of the thrower and used a header to keep the ball in front of her.

This was a great game for the Huskies and I was very proud of all the girls. They did a great job of playing as a team and they made it seem like there were more Huskies out there than Tremors, because it seemed like there were Huskies all over the field.

Because of the big win, the girls get to play kickball for part of Thursday’s practice because I did make a promise that they could do that if they won by 3 or 4 goals.

Great game girls!

Huskies tie the Storm 2-2

SAN RAMON -- The San Ramon Huskies opened the regular season this Saturday morning at 10:00am at Quail Run Park against the San Ramon Storm. The Storm is one of four U14 Rec+ teams that practice on Tuesday and Thursday at Athan Downs during the late time slot along with the Huskies, so these two teams have been seeing each other twice a week for the last month and a half. The two teams did scrimmage before the Rec+ kick off tournament and the Storm beat up on the Huskies during that match.

This game was played completely differently than that scrimmage. The Huskies kept the pressure on the Storm much of the day and just missed jumping to a quick 1-0 lead when Emily Glaser got the ball deep in the left hand corner and then crossed it and followed her pass so she was in position to score when the ball came back in the middle. Everything was done correctly except the finish. In her excitement to score Emily swung too hard and unbelievably the ball went straight up a good 15 feet, giving the goalie enough time to come over and stop the shot.

Emily would get another chance to take the lead when Jeanette Sarkany was rotated into the right forward position and quickly pushed the ball up into the right corner and made a beautiful cross. Emily was once again in perfect position and just made a nice little one touch poke into the back of the net. This happened just a couple of minutes before the end of the first half, so the Huskies went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies weren’t able to hold the lead for too long, though. The Storm slipped a pass through the defense and the only thing between the goalie and the Storm forward was the sweeper, Caitlin Weber. Caitlin tried to clear the ball, but ended up colliding with the forward in the goal box. Since the forward fell down, the referee decided that it was tripping and because it was inside the goal box, it resulted in a penalty kick. The Huskies lined up on the 18 ready to come in once the Storm player kicked the ball, but unfortunately, a few of the Huskies left on the whistle instead of after the ball was kicked. The kick went over the goal, but because the Huskies jumped off the 18 early, the Storm was awarded another kick, which they converted to tie the score at 1-1.

Since Jeanette came right out and made a difference, she was awarded the right forward spot again for the second half and she proved to Coach Jim that that was the right decision. Jeanette attacked a goal kick and fought through a couple of defenders and then dropped in a beautiful lofted shot right over the top of the goalie into the goal.

Unfortunately, the Storm came right back and got in behind the defense and followed up a shot that Navi Bal stopped but couldn’t get a handle on and ended up tying up the game again at 2-2.

The Huskies were able to hold off the Storm in the last few minutes and came away with the tie. There were chances that the Huskies couldn’t capitalize on, but the Storm had their chances as well, so all in all, it was okay to walk away with a hard fought tie.

Nice game girls. I look forward to watching you improve each week.

Huskies lose a tough one 0-1

SAN RAMON -- The Huskies came out hungry in this third game of the Rec+ kick-off tournament against the Mustang Black Ice. Jeanette Sarkany had to be convinced that she could do it, but she played goalie the first half with very little drama. Most of the entire first half the ball was on the Black Ice side of the field. The Huskies had numerous scoring chances and the Black Ice goalie had to make a number of good saves. Unfortunately, she did make all the saves and the game was tied 0-0 at half time, even though the Huskies dominated most of the half.

Starting in the second half, Erin Cantoni took over as goalie and her presence was sorely missed out in the field. In the first half, Erin played right midfielder and she had two great shots on goal that just missed. Erin did a good job at goalie, but the Black Ice got one clean look at the goal and put in a shot that Erin couldn’t get to for a 1-0 lead. Although the Huskies didn’t dominate in the second half, Drew Dudley almost tied up the game in the last minute with a nice shot that went just left of the goal.

Natali Feyzbakhsh won the star of the game patch at the end of the game. She played right fullback for the entire game and she was a wall back there that the Black Ice couldn’t get past. Caitlin Weber won the defender of the game patch with some nice saves in the sweeper position, but Amanda Fornataro easily could have won the patch as well because she played center fullback like a bulldog back there. It’s fun to watch a tough group of defenders like we have. It will make it very difficult for any team to score very many goals on us as long we keep that kind of play up. The team voted for the lightning patch hustle award winner and it was pretty much unanimous that it belonged to Emily Glaser, who is our left-footed left forward specialist. I normally like to rotate my forwards out, but Emily just keeps running so hard when she needs to and is so dominant out there that I just can’t bring myself to take her out.

Although the Huskies ended up 1-2 in the tournament, they showed they could play with any of the Mustang teams. Even though we ended up with only one goal in three games, I think it is clear that it is just a matter of time before the shots start falling for the team. If we keep taking the shots on goal, good things will happen.

My memories of each girl for this tournament:
Navi Bal - versatile player that I can put anywhere, got the player of the game in our first win
Erin Cantoni - always willing to play goalie and aggressively goes towards the ball when in the field
Elizabeth Castaneda - hurt her right shin, but wanted to keep playing even though she was noticeably limping
Madeleine Clements - predominantly played left forward and did a nice job getting the ball to Emily
Drew Dudley - just missed scoring three goals throughout the tournament, but they’ll come soon
Natali Feyzbakhsh - defensive specialist that was the unlikely first goal scorer of the season, star of the game in the 3rd game
Amanda Fornataro - plays like a bulldog. Very smart player, can play almost any position
Emily Glaser - star player, enough said
Erin Glaser - just missed scoring off of one of her sister’s nice crosses
Kristen Glavee - played almost exclusively at the important stopper position and had to run a lot with little rest
Korah Rose - used great dribbling in that first game against the Rampage, was fun to watch her play defense
Jeanette Sarkany - didn’t want to play goalie, but did a fine job, although she prefers to play forward
Gabby Silva - took a nice shot in the first game against the Rampage
Colleen Tolan - took a beating in the second game, but still wanted to get back out there and play
Caitlin Weber - had some nice clears when she was the last defender

The "OMG it's hot" game

SAN RAMON -- After playing a good tough game at 8:00am, the Huskies needed to go back out for their second game of the tournament at 11:45am. The temperature was much warmer for the afternoon game, with the thermometer reaching 100 degrees.

This was the Huskies second game in about 2 1/2 hours, yet the Mustang Dynamos were playing in their first game of the tournament, so even though both teams had the heat to contend with, the Huskies were already tired before the game even started.

Coach Jim was hoping for a quick score in the first 10 minutes because he didn’t think there was going to be much of a chance after that due to heat exhaustion. The Huskies played hard, but just didn’t have enough in the tank to keep up with the fresher Dynamos. Throughout the game, Coach Jim had to come out and escort at least four different girls off the field after they got hurt. He felt more like a medic than a coach most of the time.

The girls that were out wanted to stay on the sidelines and the girls that were in the game all wanted to come off the field. Due to the conditions, this was just a brutal game. I’m just glad we made it out of there without any major injuries.

The Huskies did lose 0-2, but there was no shame in the loss due to the unusual conditions. Both goals scored by the Dynamos were excellent shots that the goalkeeper had no chance of stopping.

Huskies start with a 1-0 win!

SAN RAMON - The first game of the season for the Huskies was against the Mustang Rampage at Coyote Crossing @8:00am. The game was part of the San Ramon Rec+ Kick-Off Tournament, which consisted of two games on Saturday and at least one more game on Sunday, with the top four (of 21) teams playing for the Championship and the Consolation game later on Sunday.

The lone score of the game came from one of the many beautiful crosses by Emily Glaser, the left footed left forward. The goal was actually scored by Natali Feyzbakhsh, the right forward who crashed towards the goal when Emily sent the ball right to the goal box, and was able to poke the ball in after it squirted out of the defensive bunch in front of the goal. The funny story about Natali getting the goal is she one of the few girls that really wants to just play defense and she was supposed to be the sweeper in this game, but she got to the game late, so I wasn’t able to start her there. Once I needed to make my substitutions, Navi Bal was playing sweeper and doing a great job, so I didn’t feel compelled to take her out, besides I usually sub out my midfielders and forwards, as they are the ones that do most of the heavy running, not the defenders. So, because she was late to the game, Natali got to play forward and she definitely capitalized on her chance.

I probably shouldn’t have written this all out because now everyone is going to show up late in hopes of being placed at forward! :)

Drew Dudley ended out missing much of the second half after getting her ankle hurt, so she earned the first blood patch of the season. Amanda Fornataro was given the defender of the game patch. She did a great job of always being in the right place at the right time and just making life miserable for the Rampage forwards. The lightning hustle patch went to the left defender Korah Rose, who showed great burst of speeds and fancy footwork to stymie the Mustang offense. The star of the game patch went to Navi Bal who was thrown into the sweeper spot in the first half (due to Natali’s lateness) and then played at goalie for the second half. If you can play sweeper and goalie in a 1-0 game, you deserve the star of the game, Navi.

Great way to start the season girl! Congratulations.
