Wolfpack win final game of regular season, 30-2 over SM/SC

LIVERMORE -- In the final game of the regular season, the Wolfpack cruised to an easy 30-2 win over the overmatched team from SM/SC. The Wolfpack’s size and speed were more than the girls from SM/SC could handle.

The Wolfpack got a chance to run their new play they learned on just the Friday before the game. It did open up some opportunities and will hopefully add a new wrinkle they can throw at St. Isidore in a couple of weeks. But before they can take on the only team to beat them this year, the Wolfpack willl play the winner of the SM/SC vs St. Joan’s game this Sunday at noon. SM/SC will take on St. Joan’s on Saturday, so we won’t know who the Wolfpack will play until Saturday afternoon, though it is probably safe to assume that it will be St. Joan’s.

Wolfpack lose first game of season, 16-9 to St. Isidore

DANVILLE -- In the third matchup of the season between the two powerhouses of the Tri-Valley CYO Basketball league, St. Raymond and St. Isidore, the Wolfpack of St. Raymond lost their first game of the year by a score of 16-9.

Breyan Ashley started the scoring early for the Wolfpack, only a minute into the game. Both teams played very aggressive and tough defense, and at halftime, the Wolfpack held a one point lead, 6-5, with Breyan scoring another basket and Alexis Hooper taking a pass from Tess Molinar from the top of the key and banking the shot in.

Midway through the third quarter, Nikki’s aggressive play resulted in her taking and making a free throw and then a minute later she took an underhand pass from Hailey Meyer and made a shot to give the Wolfpack a 9-7 lead. That was not only the last lead for the Wolfpack, it was the last of the scoring.

The St. Isidore defense swarmed and pressed the rest of the game and the Wolfpack were not able to handle the pressure.

As this was the third meeting of the two teams and since the Wolfpack won the previous two games, the Wolfpack will still end up being the regular season champions, assuming they can take care of business next weekend against the overmatched SM/SC team. In two weeks, the playoffs will begin and assuming the games go as planned, the Wolfpack will get one last chance against the team from St. Isidore in the championship game.

Wolfpack win a tight one, 14-10 over St. Isidore

DUBLIN -- The undefeated Wolfpack took on the fantastic team from St. Isidore this afternoon at the meat locker known as Fallon Middle School. The Wolfpack played St. Isidore earlier in the season and held on for only a one point win. St. Isidore was clearly the toughest team that the Wolfpack have played against this year and today’s game was another hard fought battle of two very good 4th grade girls teams.

The Wolfpack started the scoring early when Nikki passed the ball back to an open Maddie Taylor who hit nothing but net from 10 feet out only 15 seconds from tip-off. After a Breyan Ashley free throw, Nikki found an open Tess Molinar who hit a nice 8-footer. Later in the first half, Jillian Weber made a nice pass to Alexis Hooper under the basket who wasn’t ready to take the shot, so she passed it to Maddie Taylor who whipped it back to an open Jillian who used the backboard to her advantage. At halftime, the Wolfpack held a tenuous 7-6 lead.

The Wolfpack started the second half scoring when Maddie Taylor started a fast break and found a streaking Jillian weber up the court, who made a brilliant arcing layup with a defender right on her. Breyan Ashley added another free throw which tied the game up at 10-10.

The relentless defense of Nikki and Maddie proved to be too much at the end of the game as the Wolfpack were able to shut St. Isidore down the rest of the way and both girls were able to capitalize on a couple of their many steals and put the Wolfpack on top for good 14-10.

St. Isidore is the one team that has given the Wolfpack team all they could handle. The Wolfpack has a bye week next week, and their next game will be against St. Isidore again at Monte Vista.

After the game, the team videographer took a team picture with all their trophies from the Turkey Shootout Championship, unfortunately the only camera at hand was the video camera which does not take great still shots.

Wolfpack dominates tough CCOP team, 35-11

DUBLIN -- The Wolfpack took on a much improved team from CCOP this afternoon at Fallon Middle School. Although the CCOP team played tough, the Wolfpack were just too fast, too tall, and just too good, and came away with a decisive win, 35-11.

This game was Alexis Hooper’s coming out party. Alexis scored 6 of the first 8 points of the game for the Wolfpack, and came down with many rebounds, blocks and steals, making full use of her height advantage. Alexis finished with 12 points in the game, more than doubling her total points scored in the previous 6 games.

Breyan Ashley had a solid game and finished with 7 points, although her team did not need her to score as many points as normal thanks to Alexis’ contributions. Maddie Taylor, Jillian Weber, Tess Molinar and Nikki all added 4 points a piece. That’s one of the special things about this team, other teams cannot focus on any one girl as all 8 of these girls are capable of scoring, and most of them do in every game.

Hailey Meyer had another scoreless game, but she came away with a total of 4 assists, pushing her season total up to 6.

The Wolfpack will face a very hungry St. Isidore team next weekend here at Fallon at 2:20pm. It should be a good game and chance to see just how good this Wolfpack team is.

Wolfpack overwhelm SM/SC, 34-2

LIVERMORE -- The long holiday layoff didn’t seem to affect the Wolfpack of Saint Raymond, as they came out and scored early and scored often against the overmatched team from SM/SC. Maddie Taylor and Nikki provided overpowering defense, Breyan added 10 more points to her total for the year, Jillian Weber found her stroke, hitting three long range shots, both Tess Molinar and Alexis Hooper made good rebounds and both ended up with 4 points off of those rebounds, while both Hailey Meyer and Sammy Maguire had solid games even though they didn’t end up with any points.

There’s not much else to say as the game wasn’t even as close as the score would indicate, which was a ridiculous 34-2. The SM/SC team very seldom were even able to get a shot off against the relentless defense of the Wolfpack.

Wolfpack use teamwork to take St. Joan down 22-8

DANVILLE -- The Wolfpack started the second half of the regular season against St. Joan’s in the Auxiliary Gym at San Ramon Valley High. To start the game, the Wolfpack only had 5 girls, Maddie, Alexis, Hailey, Sammy and Tess. It looked like it was going to be a long game for these girls, but luckily Breyan Ashley showed up midway through the first 3 minute session. The Wolfpack started slow, falling behind 2-0, but within 6 seconds after entering the game, Breyan made her presence known, grabbing a rebound and putting it back up and in to tie the game.

By halftime, the Wolfpack used their trademark swarming defense to hold St. Joan’s to only one more basket and Maddie, Breyan and Hailey all added scores to take a 14-4 lead. During the third quarter, though, St. Joan’s effectively used the press on the Wolfpack and cut the lead to 16-8, with the Wolfpack looking a little tired and not breaking the press very well.

The 4th quarter was a different story, though. The Wolfpack started spreading out on the court and making really nice passes to break St. Joan’s press. Alexis Hooper had her best quarter of the year, scoring a basket, making an assist to Maddie for a basket and making some really nice passes as well as using her height well to disrupt the St. Joan shooters while on defense. Using the good passing and tough defense, the Wolfpack won going away and cruised to a comfortable 22-8 win.

This was yet another nice team win for the Wolfpack. 5 of the 6 girls scored baskets and 5 of the 6 also had assists, so all 6 girls had their hand in this victory. The Wolfpack are now a perfect 5-0 and have outscored their opponents 109-49. Good job girls!

Wolfpack win a whistle filled game against CCOP, 16-6

PLEASANTON -- The Wolfpack of St. Raymond came into this game against the American CCOP team very confident a week after winning the Turkey Shootout Tournament in Walnut Creek. Breyan Ashley played for the coach of the CCOP team last year, and Breyan quickly made him wish that she was still on his team. Breyan had a game-high 10 points for the Wolfpack, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Maddie Taylor was supposed to have missed this game due to her participation in the Jr. Olympics Swim Meet that was going on this weekend, but she didn’t want to let her team down and came to the game not long after swimming this morning. Maddie wasn’t able to make any of her shots today, but her tenacious defense and good ball handling were still an important factor for the Wolfpack.

Nikki, Hailey Meyer and Tess Molinar all contributed with a single basket to round out the scoring for the Wolfpack, who won handily 16-6.

The game will most likely be remembered as the “whistle game” due to the unusually large number of fouls and infractions that were called. Due to all the whistles, the game took a long time to play and the girls were never able to get into a rhythm. Regardless, the girls all played very tough defense and definitely deserved the win, which takes them to 4-0 in the regular season, after playing the all 4 of the other teams in their division. From this point on, the Wolfpack will be playing teams that they have already played.

Wolfpack eek out a one-point win over St. Isidore, 14-13

DANVILLE -- The undefeated Wolfpack of St. Raymond rolled into Monte Vista High School to take on a tough St. Isidore team. Like the Wollfpack last week, St. Isidore went into the game with only 5 players, meaning they had no substitutes. Only having 5 players didn’t seem to be a problem at first for St. Isidore, as they all played tough defense and ran the court well. For the first time this year, the Wolfpack found themselves trailing at halftime, 9-4.

In the third quarter, Maddie Taylor took the Wolfpack on her tiny back and vaulted them into a 14-11 lead. Maddie scored 8 of her game high 10 points in the third quarter. The Wolfpack’s press especially paid off in the third quarter, leading to turnovers and generally making the St. Isidore team work harder and run faster than they would have liked, which in turn tired them out due to their lack of substitutes.

In the fourth quarter, the Wolfpack had multiple chances to put St. Isidore away, but just couldn’t get the ball to fall through the net. Both Jillian Weber and Maddie Taylor took two free throws that just missed, which could have put the game out of reach, but as it turned out, St. Isidore made one shot in the fourth quarter making the score 14-13.

With 33 seconds to go, St. Isidore broke through the Wolfpack’s press, but in the process, Hailey Meyer stole the ball for the Wolfpack. Unfortunately, the time keeper did not start the clock and that is when things got strange. Instead of restarting back at the Wolfpack’s endline or giving the ball to the Wolfpack where they stole the ball and running 5 seconds off the clock, the St. Isidore coaches somehow persuaded the referees to give the ball to St. Isidore at the half with 3 seconds off the clock. The Wolfpack played tough defense and Breyan Ashley came down with the rebound and brought the ball up with under 15 seconds left in the game. The referees then called a suspect double dribble on Breyan, thus giving the ball back to St. Isidore with only 10.6 seconds left in the game. The Wolfpack stayed with their press, but St. Isidore broke it and got the ball to a player 15 feet from the basket who took a tough shot. The shot went long, but St. Isidore grabbed the rebound just under the basket with less than 2 seconds to go. The Wolfpack tried to converge on the player, but they were too late and she got a chance to take an uncontested shot right under the basket. The St. Isidore player had to rush her shot and didn’t make it, but they definitely had the shot they were looking for and could have come away with the win.

I think the coaches and parents were all impressed with the Wolfpack’s ability to battle back after being down by 7 points. It was a very intense game, especially that last quarter. All the Wolfpack parents were very impressed by the coaching job done by Coach Mark, Coach Mike and Coach Kevin. After seeing the other coaches in the league, we all know how lucky we are to have such good coaches and really good guys working with our girls. Thanks so much.

Wolfpack Too Much for SM/SC to Handle, win 28-6

LIVERMORE -- For the first 6 minutes of this game against the SM/SC American team at the Robert Livermore Community Center, the Wolfpack only had 5 players available to play. Breyan Ashley did arrive in time to play in the second quarter, but that still left the Wolfpack with only one sub for the entire game. Very quickly, it was obvious that this was not going to be a problem for the Wolfpack, who jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead. It took Breyan about 4 minutes to warm up and knock the rust off, but once she started scoring, there was no stopping her. Even though Breyan missed a quarter of the game, she still ended up with 12 of the 28 points for the Wolfpack.

Jillian Weber had a very strong second half, where she not only ended up with 4 points and an assist, but she also had 5 steals.

Both Sammy Maguire and Alexis Hooper got their first points of the season, meaning that 7 of the 8 Wolfpack have now scored.

The Wolfpack got a chance to work on their passing late in the game as Coach Molinar instructed the girls that they couldn’t take a shot until they passed the ball at least 5 or 6 times.

Five of the six Wolfpack ended up scoring, and the only girl not to make a basket, Tess Molinar, led the team with three assists. This was once again a total team effort and all the girls contributed to the big win.

Wolfpack start out hot, beat St. Joan 29-16

DUBLIN -- The 4th grade CYO basketball team of St. Raymond, known as the Wolfpack, opened their basketball season this afternoon at 4:40pm at Dublin High versus the 4th grade team from St. Joan’s. Tess Molinar started the scoring with a quick basket after a nice pass from Maddie Taylor. Between Breyan Ashley and Maddie Taylor, the Wolfpack scored 12 more points to take a commanding lead in the first half. Hailey Meyer added 4 more points in the first half giving the Wolfpack an 18-4 halftime lead.

Tess Molinar started the second half with another basket, but the St Joan’s team came out much more aggressive and started cutting into the lead throughout the second half. The team from St. Joan’s actually outscored the Wolfpack in the second half 12-11, but the Wolfpack also could not press most of the second half which took a lot of the pressure off of St. Joan’s.

The Wolfpack did manage to keep the St. Joan’s team from getting any closer than 7 points and won the game handily 29-16.

Looking at the game stats, you can see that every single girl on the team contributed with either scoring or assists or both. The Wolfpack is a very strong team that should have a very good season.
