Earthquakes tie 10-10 in exciting first game
SAN RAMON -- In their first indoor game as a team, the Earthquakes jumped out to an early lead on the defending U9G indoor soccer champions, the San Ramon Falcons. Allison Lee scored the first goal of the season and Kaitlin Lord followed her up with the second goal not long after.
The Falcons quickly put up 6 unanswered points in the first half before the Earthquakes were able to turn things around. The Earthquakes managed to bring the score to 5-6 by halftime. The Falcons definitely were a more aggressive team, especially in that first half.
Kate Boyle took over as goalie in the second half and did a great job at stopping the Falcons. Although they did score 4 more goals, they were all well shot balls that Kate didn’t really have a chance at stopping. The Earthquakes did have a 9-8 lead late in the second half, but Coach Jim made a silly coaching mistake by taking Jillian Weber out of the game while the ball was still in her defensive area. Before Riti Sachdeva could go back in and replace Jillian, the Falcons tied the game up at 9-9. About a minute later, one of the big girls on the Falcons shot from almost half court and it sailed over Kate Boyle’s hand. It was a very impressive shot that was impossible to defend.
That left the Earthquakes behind 10-9 with only a couple of minutes left in the game. Jillian Weber was put back in as a forward with the task of tying up the game. Kaitlin Lord brought the ball down and took a shot that the Falcon’s goalie was able to snag. As the goalie went to throw the ball out, Jillian Weber followed her eyes and tracked down where the ball was going to be thrown. Jillian was in position to receive the ball, but it was thrown high, so instead of trying to trap the ball, Jillian took a header from well outside of the goalie box and lasered the ball right back over the goalie’s outstretched hands for the tying goal. With under 40 seconds left to play, neither team was able to score, so the game ended at a 10-10 tie.
Considering this was our first game and the number of coaching mistakes, I think we did a good job of coming away with a tie. Nice job Earthquakes!
Unfortunately, I don’t have any video of the game, so I don’t remember exactly who scored all the goals. I know Allison Lee had at least 2, Jillian Weber had 3, Kaitlin Lord had 1, Riti Sachdeva had 1, Sarah Kamp had 1 and Alicia Seronio had 1. If I’m missing one of the girls, please let me know.
