San Ramon Crush get edged 6-5 by Danville Crush

SAN RAMON -- Wow, what an exciting first indoor game for the San Ramon Crush. It was the first indoor game for most of the girls, except for Caitlin Weber, Emily Ball, and Julia Guesnon. The girls weren’t quite sure about what to expect, but after a slow start, they started getting the hang of it. Even though the final score was 6-5, the San Ramon Crush had many chances to tie the game and easily could have won the game without some very impressive saves by the other Crush’s goalie.

It is very difficult for me to recap the game because it all just becomes a blur, everything happens so fast. Some of the highlights I do remember is how Judy was able to shut down the Danville team’s offense once she got in to play defense. Caitlin Weber made a nice goal in the first half and played some really nasty defense in the second half and had a chance to tie the game late in the second half, but just missed the goal. Adrienne Lampo played some gritty goalie the entire game and was even complemented by the opposing coach. Isabela Escalante kept her streak alive by getting nailed in the head with a hard shot. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to stay in or come out, but finally decided on coming out for awhile. When she came back in the second half, Isabela just missed a goal of her own, she took a beautiful hard shot that the goalie just managed to stop. Hannah Skrentny barely missed a tying goal in the last minute of play. Julia Guesnon had a number of chances right in front of the goal and was robbed of one sure goal by a great diving play by the Danville goalie. Makena Woon played some great defense and showed great quickness by recovering whenever an opponent got behind her. Judy took the game over once I put her in offense with at least two more goals after getting one in the first half when playing defense. I probably should have given her a little break in the second half, but I didn’t do the best job of coaching. I’m still learning where the best place to play the girls in the indoor arena. I will try to move girls around a lot so no one is stuck playing defense the whole time, although it will be very tempting keeping Makena back there just because she’s able to recover so quickly. Unlike the outdoor game, you absolutely need speed in the defensive side of the field.

Although we lost the game, it was so enjoyable watching the girls play so hard and with such passion, I couldn’t help but feel good after the game. It was a pleasure to watch the game. I hope they continue to play hard and have as much fun as I did at this game. Thanks to all.

I’m going to try and keep a tally of all the girls’ scoring, but I don’t remember exactly how many goals Judy made and if anyone other than Caitlin made a goal. If anyone remembers, please let me know.
