San Ramon Crush nipped by Pumas 3-1

SAN RAMON -- The San Ramon Crush played a very tough Danville Puma team this Saturday and came up just a little short, 3-1. The game was much closer than the score, which was close, nonetheless. The Crush had multiple shots on goal that either went a little wide, a little too high, or was able to be snagged by the very good Puma goalie.

With the goalie extraordinaire, Adrienne Lampo, out for the game (in Disneyland for her 11th birthday!), the Crush had to try out some new goalies. The first half guest goalie was Hannah Skrentny, who played fantastically. Hannah only had one shot get by her for the entire half, and was able to stop many shots by the Pumas. The first half defenders were Korah Rose and Isabela Escalante, who both had little to no defensive experience, but both did a fantastic job of protecting Hannah. Speaking of defenders, Makena Woon played the entire game at the very demanding and very important stopper position and did a great job. I don’t think anyone else on the team would be able to keep playing at such a furious pace. What makes it even more impressive that Makena was able to play the entire game at Stopper is that that one position requires the most running out of all the positions on the field.

The Crush took multiple shots on goal in the first half, but with it being Friday the 13th, bad luck was with the Crush and none of the shots found the back of the net. The Pumas knew they were lucky to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The second half started with Dawn Ye handling the goalie duties. Unfortunately, the Pumas managed to breach the Crush defense early and got two quick goals in the first five minutes. Dawn was not looking comfortable in goal and Caitlin Weber couldn’t really run due to a hip injury in the first half, so a quick swap was made to the relief of Dawn. Caitlin managed to keep the Pumas from getting any further goals, and with about 5 minutes to go in the game, Korah Rose, playing the center mid position, finally got one of the many Crush shots to get past the Puma goalie. This made the score 3-1 and with the momentum clearly on the Crush’s side. Less than a minute later, Judy Kang took a shot that just missed, and seconds after that Dawn Ye took a monstrous shot that was just a tad off the mark.

Although the final score ended 3-1, this was a game that very easily could have gone the other way. The Crush played tough the entire game and I was very proud of them all. Next game is on Saturday, Feb. 21 @ 1:00pm.
